Keight MacLean is a Queer, disabled, female artist living and working in Toronto. MacLean graduated from OCAD in 2016 and is an alumna of the school’s revered Florence Program in Italy. Working as a full-time artist, MacLean is represented by galleries in Toronto, Montreal and Kingston. MacLean is an award-winning artist, most notably named Best in Painting by the Toronto Outdoor Art Fair and has been recognized for her work in The Toronto Star and the Globe and Mail’s “Luxe” magazine. With work in collections in the United States, England, the United Arab Emirates, Norway and across Canada, Keight has had 10 solo exhibitions, over 20 group shows and an international following of over 14k on social media. She is currently preparing for a month in residence at the Chateaux Orquevaux in France.
Inspired by her time studying the Old Masters, Keight MacLean’s work combines the old with the new, reproducing historical portraits of women before applying contemporary, experimental and sometimes destructive additions to them. With a love of European history, MacLean’s focus on women was born after years of reading male-driven histories. Her work now asks the viewer to consider the women behind museums’ many “Portrait of a Lady” and shine a light on the historically silenced.
