Join the MoD in exploring Canadian Black History. Families and adults alike are invited to a reading of the book The Lucie and Thornton Blackburn Story with local author and children’s educator Suzette Daley. Explore the story further by engaging in a hands-on archaeology activity and a Q&A with the author following the reading.
In addition to her work in literacy, Suzette has a particular interest in highlighting the experiences of people of colour. Her work The Story of Lucie and Thornton Blackburn is based on the true-life experiences of freedom seekers who escaped enslavement in Kentucky and later founded Toronto’s first taxi company The City. Their story is one of resilience, entrepreneurship and community building, and Suzette’s vivid storytelling brings their legacy to life.
This program is open to all, however due to some historical themes discussed we recommend audience members be 8+. If you have any questions about the program, please contact a member of the programming team at [email protected].
