Hemlocks

Tiny cones hang down at branch tips, over winter they will open and release seed.

This fall morning I sit cross-legged in the soft duff beneath the only hemlock in our small woodlot, imagining a whole grove of them.

Surely this was once so, for the beams of our barn are said to be hemlock…
