Local Heroes 2025
Our annual celebration of the people whose kindness, service and spirit uplift others.
The world can feel dark these days, but as Leonard Cohen reminds us, “There is a crack … in everything. That’s how the light gets in.” Fortunately, the world is full of people who keep the light shining by demonstrating what humanity, empathy, compassion and excellence are all about.
Such is the case with this year’s Local Heroes. Whether it’s building community through music, going above and beyond in health care, being a tenacious athlete, championing the environment or working to remember those who served in and those who supported Canada’s military, all bring something positive and worthwhile. We are richer for their efforts, and we salute them.

Doug Kirkwood
Why is remembering veterans important? For Kirkwood, it has to do with the next generations. “I want the younger people to know the sacrifices that were made overseas and at home … the effort and support that was given to the war effort.”

Flora Dickison and Sarah Cianfarani
These two graduates of Dufferin County’s Youth Climate Activation Circle have become environmental advocates for sustainability.

Lynda McDougall
For the band members of the Ukuladies and Ukuladdies, their energetic band leader brings joy into their lives through music.

Sue Brissett, Mervia Scott, Amandeep Gidda-Atwal, Sydney Belcher and Anneka Rainford
This team of caring nurses provide palliative care during what, for most people, is the most difficult time of their lives.

Sarah Caylor
Nicknamed “Crash,” this Caledon mountain biker and adventure cyclist is driven to challenge herself in everything she does.

Sanjay Lekhi
The role of the pharmacist goes beyond filling prescriptions – it’s also about being part a community’s health journey.
